The Secret Fighting Arts of the Americas: A Hoplological Expedition

The Secret Fighting Arts of the Americas highlights the most profound moments of the first  Hoplological Expedition in over thirty years! One part adventure documentary, one part martial art instructional film, The Secret Fighting Arts of The Americas is presented as a Docu-Instructional of Caribbean Martial Arts that can be enjoyed at your own pace on our streaming platform!

HOPLOLOGY REBORN

Hoplology / noun / A science that studies human combative behavior and performance

In 2018 a multidisciplinary team consisting of martial artists, anthropologists and filmmakers descended upon the small island of Barbados to study, exchange and document the hidden martial arts of The Americas; arts born from an amalgamation of cultures and paradigms that were often forced together in the new world. The Immersion Foundation joins forces with a stellar group of Caribbean martial artists to document the stickfighting arts of Bajan Sticklicking (Barbados) and Trinidadian Kalinda! Sticks aren’t the only weapons used in the Caribbean however! Witness the rhythmic movements of Trinidadian Gilpin (double machete) and experience the thunderous and flexible power of Indo-Trinidad & Tobagonian Rope Jab, a fearsome whip art born from the melting pot of African and East Indian culture and spirituality! Each art tells a story of strife, slavery, liberation or rebellion as well as how peoples found new methods of movement in a new land.
